The Otter Lake Recreation Area is part of a western section of the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, nearby the town of Medart, Florida. Otter Lake is one of several freshwater lakes in the Panacea uplands section that's covered in pine and oak forests. The fine fishing here attracts anglers looking for largemouth bass, spotted sunfish (stumpknockers), speckled perch, catfish, brim and warmouth. Here on Panacea lake, outboard motors are limited to 10 horsepower, cutting out high powered bass boats and their wakes. Otter Lake anglers receive some competition from a half dozen feathered friends. Active ospreys in the area cruise the lake, searching for food to feed their young. The osprey finds it hard to resist showing off its fine catch, circling the nest a few times. The Panacea Unit features picnic facilities and a lakeside boat ramp. Primitive hiking trails are woven throughout the area.
