Sand Mountain Pass

Sand Mountain Pass - Idaho

Sawtooth Trip Report

Looking like a row of teeth from the jaws of a great white, Idaho’s most famous peaks lend their name to the immense Sawtooth National Forest and Sawtooth Wilderness Area.
Just to the south of Obsidian on Route 75, hikers will find one of the popular outings in the Sawtooth Wilderness. Beginning at Tin Cup Campground and Pettit Lake, this classic 5 star hike winds through a string of Sawtooth peaks, alongside a handful of beautiful alpine lakes and introduces hikers to the purest air in America. This 18 mile loop trail is an excellent trip for fishing, bird watching and photography.
Rob’s adventure almost triples the hiking miles as he once again renews his title of Wilderness Vagabond in this special land. His five day trip, while enduring an entire wing of mosquitoes, followed a figure eight pattern through an alpine garden of wildflowers and on to the inviting lakes of Toxaway, Ingeborg, Edith and Twin Lakes. This view looks ahead at the challenging Sand Mountain Pass, a small price to pay for such a deluxe outing.
