Travel through Colorado’s famous mountains, head back in time at Mesa Verde’s cliff dwellings, or relive Wild West Gold Rush days at Durango; all part of the San Juan Skyway experience. This Coal Bank Pass view is found along the Million Dollar Highway, and approaching the tree line of the San Juan National Forest. This 265 mile byway, designated as an All-America Road, has your eyes skipping across some of Colorado’s tallest peaks and navigating some of the steepest grades of U.S. Route 550, S.R. 145, U.S. 160, and S.R. 62.
Although you could drive the byway in a day, plan on the better part of a week to explore the mysteries of the abandoned cliff houses in Mesa Verde, the old mining towns of Telluride, Silverton and Animas Forks, or a taking a kayaking adventure on the Mad River. Whether you’re in for an action packed day of biking, rafting and four-wheeling, or simply enjoying the autumn colors at Ridgway or riding the Silverton and Durango Scenic Railroad, this journey along Colorado’s San Juan Skyway offers plenty to keep you busy.
