Church of Abiding Presence

Church of Abiding Presence

The Lutheran Theological Seminary, established in 1826, is located along a famed north-south running ridge in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The locals soon referred this area as simply, Seminary Ridge. Unfortunately the area is better known for a major battle during the Civil War, rather than the Lutheran's seminary.
On the 3rd day of fighting in July, 1863, twelve thousand Confederate troops dropped down from Seminary Ridge, across the valley and Emmitsburg Road, toward Cemetery Ridge. This attack, later known as Pickett's Charge, was a costly decision for Lee's army. Over five thousand soldiers were lost in one hour. The battle at Gettysburg was not the last engagement of the Civil War, as Lee had hoped. And, although there was not a clear victor, Lee's army never again took an offensive of this magnitude.
Pictured here is the Church of Abiding Presence, dedicated in 1942. The Lutheran Chapel employs noteworthy, mid 20th century architecture enlisting a strong Greek influence, used throughout the United States. The chapel's steeple and tower are a well recognized landmark, seen from all around Gettysburg.
