You may often hear an old timer repeat this adage, "If you don't like weather, wait ten minutes." And so it seems, Florida's weather changes constantly. Although Florida is nicknamed the Sunshine State, it would be a rare occasion to see a cloudless sky. The peninsula is less than 140 miles wide and is dominated by two large bodies of water that have a significant impact on the weather.
Winter months are marked with moisture laden cold fronts that typically push through the state from the northwest. Florida's long summers usually exhibit daily patterns of afternoon thunderstorms. These powerful and majestic storm clouds are loaded with moisture and drop one to two inches of rain in a short period of time.
In the Picture of the Day a patchy cloud formation passes over a Central Florida lake, enhanced by the setting sun. The Sunshine State is dotted with thousands of ponds and lakes and may give Minnesota some competition when it comes to their slogan of land of a thousand lakes.
