Barge Canal

Barge Canal

Brevard County, originally named mosquito county, stretches along the east coast of Florida for 75 miles. The Indian River parallels the coastline and is used as the Intracoastal Waterway. This sunset view looks westward on the Barge Canal with the Indian River in the background. The Barge Canal connects Port Canaveral Inlet with the Intracoastal Waterway and affords the power company's barges a quick route from a fuel storage depot, at the port, to the Indian River power plant. This waterway also provides the public with easy access to both main rivers (Indian and Banana) and the Atlantic Ocean. This area features prime saltwater fishing, including record breaking red fish, sea trout, snook and black drum.
