Buffalo Boy

Buffalo Boy

All of these unusual names; Buffalo Boy, Old Hundred, Pride of the West, Green Mountain and Highland Mary, apply to gold and silver mines located in the vicinity of Cunningham Gulch, near Silverton, Colorado. Buffalo Boy and Old Hundred (named after the Bible's 100th Psalm) were accessible by narrow trails, wide enough for a mule, starting at 11,000 feet elevation. A tram was built to move ore down the mountainside to Niegoldstown. Pictured here is Buffalo Boy tram house that contained the transport mechanism and cabling for the tram. It is now refurbished as a residence.
There are numerous smaller mines in the area, but the largest vein was located near the top of Galena mountain. The Niegold brothers filed this claim in 1872. Their cabins, located at the base of the mountain near Stony Creek, took on the name of Niegoldstown. Later the town added a post office, general store, saloon and hotel.
