The Buckboard

The Buckboard

An antique delivery wagon or buckboard, adds some noteworthy interest to this New Mexican landscape. This once prized possession, often made of pecan wood, met all of the rural family's transportation needs, just as today's minivan or SUV. With the advent of automotive mass production, the hand built, horse drawn buggies, phaetons, coaches and a wide variety of wagons faded out quietly. Before the 1900s, ordinary citizens depended either on horses or mules for land transportation, and often times simply walked.
During the late 19th century, mobility and change became commonplace. Railroads, steamships, cable cars and electric powered trolley cars made it easy for the urban rich, as well as the poor, to move about the country.
