Oregon’s coastline, a countless string of state parks and waysides, is a powerful tribute to the foresight of Governor Oswald West. The early 20th century governor was first to reclaim the beaches for public use and ensure a coastline of parkland. For Salem residents, Route 34 leads from the capital city and the I-5 corridor to Waldport. This scenic drive over the coastals has beachgoers headed to Cape Perpetua, Waldport and Newport. These slow paced coastal communities allow for a break that may include a round of golf, browsing through art galleries, or a little antiquing. For those unable sit still or relax, coastal streams and rivers provide the perfect opportunity for kayaking and fishing.
