Minnehaha Falls
|
Minnehaha Falls are considered by the locals the best falls in Rabun County. This particular
Minnehaha is in the state of Georgia, and is not the Minnesota Falls popularized by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
Found west of Clayton, the 60 foot falls drops over layer upon layer of shale ledges, and into a wide pool at its base. A visit to
Minnehaha can be a fun adventure for school age children, although the half mile path harbors a few toe-stubbing tree roots. Adults will appreciate the mountain setting as both sides of the cascade are lined with rhododendron that come into full bloom by mid-May.
The falls are found from old GA 441 (Rabun Lake Road). This twisting road follows the shoreline of Rabun Lake and passes dozens of summer cottages. Just before arriving at the Nacoochee Dam (map), Low Gap Road crosses the river and leads to Bear Gap Road. A small, knee high sign that's easily missed, points a half mile (left) to
Minnehaha Falls. A steep set of stairs and narrow pullout are the only clues to the falls trail.
