Colorado Rockies View

Rocky Mountains

Interstate 70 appears to bisect continental United States as it carves its way from Baltimore, Maryland, in the east to Cove Fort in central Utah. This super highway guides traffic through 10 states and was the first interstate highway project in the nation. Sections of I-70 follow America's old National Road.
This early morning view along Colorado's I-70 is marked with stormy skies and a faint fragment of rainbow color. The barren Rocky Mountain peaks rise up through an evergreen blanket called the White River National Forest. Colorado and Utah presented many challenges during design and construction of I-70. Engineering marvels are witnessed at the Eisenhower Tunnel (highest elevation of the interstate system - 11,158 feet), Glenwood Canyon and San Rafael Swell. The national highway system boasts enough highway to travel twice around the world.
