Lizard Head Wilderness

Lizard Head Wilderness

Thirty-seven miles of trails are some of the few traces of human intervention among 41,300 acres of Lizard Head wilderness. This infrequently used recreation area is accessed by Colorado's Route 145, a scenic drive that weaves through the peaks of the San Juan Mountains. Lizard Head itself rises over 13,000 feet. These rugged mountains draw only the experienced mountaineers. Mount Wilson and El Diente (The Tooth) presents the ultimate climb among the Fourteeners. For the acrophobics, a safer drive through the magnificent peaks is in order. The San Juans, during late September, are draped in gold. One of the main autumn attractions is the crisp mountain air and hillsides blanketed with golden aspens. This scenic highway, a section of Route 145, runs from Placerville to Stoner.
