Wilbur-by-the-Sea

Wilbur-by-the-Sea

Not long after Christopher Columbus made his famous voyage to the New World, Juan Ponce de Leon began exploring Florida's east coast. Today, the Ponce Inlet, leading from the Atlantic Ocean to the Halifax River, echos Deleon's name. The inlet was further explored by Captain Antonio de Prado in 1569, and appropriately named Los Mosquitos. Now, the mosquitoes are under control and this stretch of beautiful, powdery, white sand beach is enjoyed by residents and visitors of Wilbur-by-the-Sea. Only one access road is available, as the tip of the peninsula ends at the north jetty, adjacent to the inlet. Ponce Inlet has a notorious claim to fame and stands as one of the most treacherous cuts in the southeast United States.
