Town of Elkhorn

Town of Elkhorn

The ghost town of Elkhorn lies in the shadow of Crow Peak (Elevation 9,415 feet) and the Elkhorn Mountain Range, just northeast of Boulder, Montana. The twenty mile gravel access road is maintained for a few of the town's residents. Only a handful of historic buildings exist, including this equipment shack at the end of town.
Elkhorn reached its peak in the 1870s employing thousands of men, 1,500 mules and 500 woodsmen. Elkhorn faded in 1892 along with the price of silver. In its time, almost 9 million ounces of silver were mined, as well as 8,500 ounces of gold and 4 million pounds of lead.
