Town of Elkhorn

Town of Elkhorn

The ghost town of Elkhorn lies in the shadow of Crow Peak (Elevation 9,415 feet) and the Elkhorn Mountain Range. Found just northeast of Boulder, Montana,a twenty mile gravel access road is maintained for a few of the town's residents. Only a handful of historic buildings exist, including this equipment shack at the end of town.
Elkhorn, now a state park, reached its peak in the 1870s employing thousands of men, including 500 woodsmen to gather wood for lumber and 1500 mules to move the ore. Elkhorn faded in 1892 along with the price of silver. In its time, in its prime almost 9 million ounces of silver worth 14 million dollars were mined, as well as 8500 ounces of gold and 4 million pounds of lead.
