Cedar Creek

Fishing ponds, a swimming pool, picnic shelters and game courts add up to plenty of summer family fun at Gilmer County's Cedar Creek State Park. This early evening scene looks over the parks main water feature where a string of three ponds follow in succession. Here the bass, trout, cats and bluegill are ready to jump on a hook. There's plenty of shoreline to keep active youngsters busy. Those with excessive energy, the park offers paddle boats to take to the water. For land-lubbers, head to the woods for a trek over 14 miles of hiking trails.
This West Virginia park is proud of two preserved historic buildings. A restored log cabin doubles as the check-in point at the campground. The Pine Run School House, serving the community for almost 50 years, is complete with student desks and inkwell, slate blackboard, a cloak room and school bell. A pot belly stove was used to heat the one room school during the cold mountain winters.
