Lake McDonald

Lake McDonald

Despite the arid conditions in America's western states, Glacier National Park has more than its share of lakes. These lakes were carved by glaciers and now fed by alpine streams. By early summer, glaciers and snowmelt fuel lake bound mountain streams. At Triple Divide, water can travel east to the Atlantic, west to the Pacific or north to Canada's Hudson Bay.
Lake McDonald, pictured here, is one of 130 named lakes at Glacier. It is also the largest, spanning a ten mile section adjacent to Going-to-the-Sun Road. This crystal clear lake is also the deepest, at 465 feet. A wonderful hiking trail skirts the northern shore of Lake McDonald, with access at both ends. Scenic views are found all around this picturesque lake.
