North Coast Harbor, a district in downtown Cleveland, is located on the shore of Lake Erie. This popular section of town houses the Great Lakes Science Center, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the Cleveland Browns Stadium. Continuous improvements were made along the city’s waterfront. Piers were constructed on each side of the mouth of the Cuyahoga River, and breakwaters further enhanced the port. The gap, marked by lighthouses, permitted vessels easily access the Cuyahoga River. The West Pierhead Lighthouse, seen in the background of this view, originally marked the Genesee River at Rochester before being relocated to Cleveland.
     The 2006 Tall Ships Celebration kicked off in this Ohio port during an extra long weekend in July. During the Huntington Cleveland Harborfest, a special event, visitors learn about the history of sailing, and took the opportunity to experience sailing firsthand. Pictured here is the Windy II in full sail as it passes the West Pierhead Lighthouse. Windy II, from Chicago, was one of the sailing ships that met at the North Coast Harbor celebration.
     Entertainment at the festival includes ship tours, live music, educational displays, hands on children exhibits, and the all important food stands. The Tall Ships tour is expected to return to the North Coast Harbor in 2010.
