Mushroom Rock

Mushroom Rock

Photos by Ben Prepelka

Mushroom Rock      A pair of giant mushrooms greet visitors at this Kansas state park. Located about 30 miles from Salina and seeming more like 300, the small five and a half acre Mushroom Rock State Park is found in the midst of the Kansas plains, surrounded by farmland in all directions.
Constant prairie winds, a subject of modern energy production, have created these 15 foot tall mushroom shaped sandstone sculptures. A small brook and gravel access road divides the park into two sections. Unusual shaped rocks are found on either side of the road, requiring only a short walk to see all of the geological oddities. A picnic area, hand pumped well and rest room are the only amenities.
