Three Spot

Three Spot

Photos by Terri Prepelka

The Three Spot locomotive, a Baldwin built 2-6-0, has been a Two Harbors resident for over 120 years. Engine 3, with a seized cylinder, has remained at the depot at Two Harbors since 1923 and has fascinated locomotive enthusiasts ever since.
The locomotive was originally shipped from Philadelphia to Duluth by rail. Without a rail connection, the remainder of the trip to Two Harbors was accomplished by tug and barge along the Lake Superior shore. The vintage steam engine was one of a a Two Harbors Depotfew designed to burn wood. During the winter when the lake was frozen over, supply of coal was always in jeopardy.
The Duluth and Iron Range Railway was established to move iron ore and taconite from the Vermilion Range to the Great Lakes ports of Duluth and Two Harbors, Minnesota. The harbor (Two Harbors) was established in 1888 and by 1907 was transporting over 8 million ton of iron ore annually, along with freight and passengers until 1960.
