L.A. Dunton

L.A. Dunton - Connecticut

Photos by Ben Prepelka

As the sun sinks below the Connecticut horizon, the L.A. Dunton lies in a calm Mystic Harbor. This sleek sailing schooner, a 123 foot long Gloucester fisherman, was one of the fastest vessels found on the Grand Banks fishing grounds.
The L.A. Dunton was built in 1921 by Massachusetts' Arthur D. Story and was launch from his Essex shipyard. Restoration began in 1974 and was fully returned to its original condition. Today, this tall ship is a National Historic Landmark, designated in 1994.
Historic Mystic is a museum town, with 60 original buildings and over a dozen vintage vessels. The town is filled with interesting exhibits, from a rigging loft to the tall ships, a working shipyard and the 19th century Mystic Village.
