Some tribes feared it, others used it as a rallying point ... all were held in awe by its incredible Enchanted Rock Entrance Sign - Fredericksburg, Texas mass and often disturbed by its moanings and groanings. Enchanted Rock is thought to be the second largest exposed batholith in North America only surpassed by Georgia's Stone Mountain. Composed of pink granite, geologists suggest its unusual sounds come from expansion and contraction caused by heat of the sun.
Enchanted Rock Wildflowers - Fredericksburg, Texas    Today's visitors are no longer afraid of Enchanted Rock, in fact they flock to this Texas state natural area, enjoying primitive backpacking, camping, hiking, rock climbing, and picnicking. Because of its popularity and limited parking, it's a good idea to arrive early on weekends or reserve a day pass on-line. Enchanted Rock Kiosk - Fredericksburg, Texas Dubbed E Rock by Gen Y-sters, the 1600 acre Enchanted Rock State Natural Area provides areas for primitive camping, rappelling, technical rock climbing and seven miles of hiking trails. A short half mile path leads to the 425 foot summit of Enchanted Rock. Experienced climbers take on dozens of established routes inside the 1000 foot long Enchanted Rock Fissure. A four mile circular trail loops its way around the base of the 645 acre rock, an area strewn with fallen rocks and huge boulders. Those that climb to the top find the summit a smooth granite dome, the perfect perch to take in a 360 degree, unimpeded view of Texas Hill Country.
