The Wolverine State
Michigan, a Midwestern state of the United States of America, is named after Lake Michigan. The name is a French adaptation of the Ojibwe term mishigami, meaning "large water". Bounded by four of the five Great Lakes and boasting the longest freshwater shoreline in the world, the state is a haven for water related recreational activites. Michigan is second only to Alaska when it comes to the number of historic lighthouses. Michigan consists entirely of two peninsulas. The Lower Peninsula, sometimes called "The Mitten" is the center for industrialization and urban populations, while the Upper Peninsula is an untamed region of dense forest and countless scenic wonders. Spread throughout these two peninsulas are 78 state parks, 19 recreation areas, a half dozen state forests, 6 national park areas and 6 scenic byways.
